Slovakia has donated the S-300 air defense system to Ukraine to help it defend itself against Russian aggression, Prime Minister Eduard Heger said on Friday.
Ukraine has called on Western nations to use air defense equipment to help repel a Russian military offensive that is now in its second month.
“I can confirm that Slovakia donated the S-300 air defense system to Ukraine on the basis of its request to assist in self-defense due to an armed attack by the Russian Federation,” Heger said in an email.
Heger, who visited Kyiv on Friday, also said that Slovakia’s defense was secured.
Slovakia, a NATO member, uses an array of the S-300 air defense system it inherited after the break-up of Czechoslovakia in 1993.
Slovakia to receive new US Patriot missile defense system
Slovakia’s allies will deploy the fourth array of Patriot missile defense systems in the NATO member state, Slovak Defense Minister Jaroslav Nant has announced.
According to the minister, the development of the Patriot battery is intended to protect the territory of the country after the donation of the S-300 anti-missile system to Ukraine.
The ministry said the Patriot battery would arrive next week, in addition to the batteries brought to Slovakia by Germany and the Netherlands in March, and would remain in Slovakia for as long as needed.
