German Chancellor Olaf Solz traveled from Pristina, where he met with Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, to sign a comprehensive binding agreement with Belgrade as a precondition for European integration.
“It is inconceivable that two countries (Kosovo, Serbia) that do not recognize each other can become members of the European Union,” Olaf Solz said in a joint press conference with the Kosovo prime minister.
The German chancellor urged Pristina and Belgrade to take the dialogue process seriously in order to find a political solution, and reiterated that “only dialogue will open the European perspective of Kosovo”.
Olaf Solz’s remarks came after Albin Kurti said Kosovo would apply to the EU by the end of the year for membership.
The Kosovo prime minister has argued that his government is committed to dialogue and accused Belgrade of undermining the process. Kurti described Olaf Solz’s visit as historic, noting that it was the German chancellor’s first visit to Kosovo.
Pristina was the first stop on Chancellor Olaf Solz’s Balkan tour.
He arrived in Belgrade this afternoon, while in the evening he will attend the working lunch given by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Thessaloniki to the leaders of the countries participating in the Summit of the Process for Cooperation in Southeast Europe (SEECP).
Tomorrow Olaf Solz will travel to Sofia and Skopje. The purpose of the German Chancellor’s tour is to speed up the resolution of open issues between the Balkan countries in order to pave the way for their European integration.
