South Africa: Approves booster dose with Johnson & Johnson vaccine

South African regulators have approved the use of Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine for a second or booster dose, paving the way for the booster dose of this vaccine, which is widely used in South Africa, to enhance protection against the Omicron variant of the new coronavirus.

The country had already announced this month that it was preparing to offer booster doses of Pfizer and J&J COVID-19 vaccines, but did not specify when booster doses of the J&J vaccine would be available.

The South African Health Product Authority (SAPHRA) said in a statement today that it had approved the use of the J&J vaccine for a second or booster dose at least two months after the initial vaccination was completed, either with the J&J single-dose vaccine or with a another approved mRNA vaccine against COVID-19.

J&J vaccine boosters have so far only been available to health professionals, while Pfizer vaccine boosters are scheduled to be available from January for those who have had their second dose six months or more ago.

South Africa relied heavily on the two companies’ vaccines in its COVID-19 vaccination campaign, which earlier this month gave at least one dose of COVID vaccine to 44% of its adult population.

This rate is higher than in many other African countries, but far from the government’s target for the end of the year.
