The southern region of Brazil must still face the strong wave of heat for a few more days, but the forecast is that it will dissipate as of Wednesday (19), according to Francisco de Assis Diniz, chief meteorologist at the Inmet (National Institute of Meteorology).
In an interview with CNN this Sunday (16), he stated that the wave reached much of the Rio Grande do Sul and Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. In the Brazilian state, it generated a maximum temperature of 37.9ºC in Porto Alegre on Saturday (15), and 40.6ºC in the city of Uruguaiana.
“Temperatures have been in the range of 40ºC, 41ºC in Rio Grande do Sul in the west and southwest. This heat wave continues until Wednesday, with a temperature in the range of 40ºC, also reaching the south of Mato Grosso do Sul, and then it dissipates”, he says.
Despite the intense heat, temperatures are unlikely to reach the records recorded in Argentina, with several locations above 44ºC and the country’s capital, Buenos Aires, recording the second highest temperature in history.
According to Diniz, the expectation is that the heat wave will not reach the Southeast region, as it is stationed in Rio Grande do Sul and parts of Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul. “In the Southeast, the rain trend continues, especially between São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais, with localized storms and significant volumes”.
The heat in the south will also create conditions for the occurrence of thunderstorms earlier this week, with the possibility of hail.
to the city of São Paulo, the forecast for the week is cloudy skies and closed weather, with conditions for more rain and few hours of sunshine.
“The absence of the Sun is because the winds are throwing a lot of moisture from the ocean off the coast of São Paulo, Espírito Santo and the South into this region, hence the conditions for intense rains, along with a thermal contrast with the hot areas”, it says.
not case of Minas Gerais, which has been affected by heavy rains at the beginning of the year, the forecast for the week is for interns. “During the week, starting on Wednesday, the rain conditions return, catching more Espírito Santo and the central part of Minas Gerais, but not as intense as before, under normal conditions”, says the meteorologist.
Diniz says that the rains are returning to affected areas in the Center-Southeast, especially in Bahia and in Minas Gerais, but “in a more peaceful way. But we need to wait and see if there is any change in the atmosphere.”
So far, the forecast for February is rains within normal limits, but the occurrence of storms is not ruled out yet, due to the high temperatures.
“However, we have the forecast in March to return to the intensification of rains again. We can have an end of February with intense rains catching Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and Goiás”, he says.
