S&P 500 Index opens modestly lower, energy stocks decline

  • The major Wall Street indices opened mixed on Tuesday.
  • Energy stocks post big losses amid falling crude oil prices.
  • Tech stocks are trading in positive territory after the opening bell.

After a long weekend the main stock indices they opened mixed on Tuesday. At the time of writing, the S&P 500 fell 0.2% on the day to 4,343, the Dow Jones Industrial Average it is losing 0.37% to 34,658 and the Nasdaq Composite is up 0.1% to 14,741.

Among the top 11 sectors of the S&P 500, the Energy Index is losing 1.77% under pressure from a more than 2% drop in crude oil prices. Additionally, the 2.6% drop in the 10-year US Treasury yield is weighing on the financial index, which is down 1.3%.

On the other hand, the Technology Index has risen 0.4% as the top performing main sector after the opening bell. Later in the session, market participants will closely follow the June ISM Services PMI.
