THE State of São Paulo reached a historic milestone by recording the lowest number of robberies in August since 2001 when the recording of criminal incidents began. The data are from the São Paulo Public Security Secretariat (SSP).
In August this year there were 15,185 incidents of robberies, representing a drop of 19.7% compared to the same period in 2023. The index is the lowest in the historical series, recorded in the last 24 years.
Other crimes also showed a significant drop, such as vehicle theft, with 2,398 police reports, showing a 15% reduction compared to August 2023.
Cargo thefts, from 486 to 380 occurrences, showed a drop of 21.8%, reaching the lowest mark since 2004. Thefts in general had a reduction of 5.5% compared to the previous year, with 46,932 occurrences. With just 196 cases, homicides reach the lowest rate in history. The rate was below 200 for the first time in the historical series.
Actions and other results
During the thirty days of August, the São Paulo police arrested 17,088 offenders. Around 1,262 illegal firearms, including 17 rifles were seized.
The numbers show an increase in vehicle recovery. In 2024, 4,491 vehicles were recovered, an increase of 17.4% compared to 2023.
The Civil Police recorded 196 intentional homicides in August, eight fewer cases compared to the same period in 2023. This drop was the fifth of the year for the criminal category. In comparison, the months of January (215), March (227), April (188) and June (189) had already recorded the lowest monthly marks in 24 years.
A 4.9% reduction in rape incidents was recorded, compared to August 2023. Across the state of São Paulo, the Women’s Defense Police Stations registered 16 cases of femicides, three fewer compared to 2023.
