Inflation in Spain rose sharply in March, exceeding estimates and was at its highest level since May 1985, according to preliminary data released by the Spanish statistical agency INE.
Consumer prices stood at 9.8% year-on-year, both nationally and in line with EU standards, compared with estimates for a rise of 7.9%.
Inflation was 7.6% in February.
The rise in inflation is attributed to the rise in prices for electricity, oil, food and non-alcoholic beverages.
Structural inflation, excluding food and energy prices, rose to 3.4% from 3% in February. This is the highest level since September 2008.
On a monthly basis, inflation rises to 3% according to national standards and 3.9% according to EU harmonized standards.
