Spain records hottest pre-summer heat wave in 20 years

Fan sellers were doing good business in the southern city of Seville on Saturday as Spain froze in the hottest pre-summer heat wave in at least 20 years.

Carriage drivers dampen the horses that take tourists through Seville’s historic sights, such as the Palacio Real Alcazar and Plaza de Espana.

Temperatures reached 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) in Seville’s Guadalquivir valley and the nearby city of Cordoba on Saturday, the national meteorology office AEMET said.

Temperatures could climb to 42 degrees Celsius (108 Fahrenheit) in the Guadiana valley, Extremadura and other parts of southern Spain as early as Saturday, forecasters said.

On Sunday, the heat wave could intensify as temperatures could reach 43 degrees Celsius in parts of southern Spain.

A cloud of hot air from North Africa has raised temperatures, AEMET meteorologists said, and the sweltering heat wave could last across most of Spain until June 15, six days before the official start of summer on June 21.

Meteorologists predicted strong winds and storms in parts of Spain.
