Spain will ask the EU to support ICJ order for Israel to stop operation in Rafah

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said he will ask European Union (EU) member states to officially support the order from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for Israel to halt its military operation in Rafah.

Speaking on Monday (27) alongside the Irish and Norwegian foreign ministers at a press conference in Brussels, Albares said he would ask the other 26 EU members to declare their support for the ICJ decision and that if Israel opposed the court's decision, “take the right measures to enforce that decision and support one of the most important bodies of the UN Charter”.

Last week, Spain, Ireland and Norway announced that they would formally recognize a Palestinian state.

On Friday, the ICJ ordered Israel to immediately suspend its military operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, further increasing international pressure on Israel as it wages its war against Hamas.

Humanitarian agencies appeal to the UN Security Council

Several global aid organizations wrote a joint letter on Monday calling on the UN Security Council to enforce ICJ orders that Israel “immediately halt” its military offensive in Rafah.

“Immediate action is necessary to uphold international law and ensure that the government of Israel fulfills its obligations as determined by the ICJ,” the letter said.

Despite the order, “the bloodshed continued,” the letter said.

“We call on the UN Security Council to take decisive action to ensure that ICJ orders are implemented, allowing humanitarian aid to reach those in need and enabling full investigations into violations of international law.

“The Security Council must act now to defend justice, protect human rights and maintain international peace and security. Failure to do so would further undermine the conditions to sustain human life in Gaza and undermine global confidence in the primacy of international law.”
