Sri Lanka: Army ordered to shoot protesters involved in “violence” or looting

The situation in Sri Lanka has spiraled out of control with the country experiencing the worst economic crisis in its history, while the government has given military the “green light” to shoot those protesters considers that they are taking part in “violent acts” or looting.

According to Reuters, the order was given because Protesters stormed the home of the prime minister and members of his governmentwho are considered responsible for the economic crisis in the country.

“Security forces have been instructed to shoot anyone they see looting public property or endangering the lives of others,” the defense ministry said.

In fact, the police announced on Tuesday (10/5) eight peopleincluding two police officers, were killed during the violent incidents. Also, 65 residential buildings were damagedof which 41 were set on fire and 88 cars and buses as well as hundreds of two-wheelers were destroyed, according to police.

Also, according to the central hospital of the capital, 219 people were injured in violent episodes and are hospitalized. Six other people were injured in other incidents.

Earlier, the UN denounced the escalation of violence in the country and called on the country’s authorities to prevent the outbreak of new violent incidents and to start a dialogue with the people.
