Minister Ricardo Lewandowski, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), determined the transfer of Roger Abdelmassih from the Tremembé Penitentiary, in the Ribeira Valley, to the Penitentiary Hospital of the State of São Paulo. The decision is dated March 1st and was published on Monday (6th) in the Diário da Justiça.
In a recent clinical evaluation, carried out on February 24, 2023, Abdelmassih was diagnosed with heart failure with probable secondary renal failure.
According to the medical report presented in the case file, this condition can culminate in acute pulmonary edema, with a high risk of death. In addition, the permanence of anorexia was pointed out.
Minister Ricardo Lewandowski stressed that he recognizes the seriousness of the crimes committed by the former doctor and decided to transfer him to the penitentiary hospital until he is physically able to return to prison, which must be attested by a new medical report.
Roger Abdelmassih was sentenced to 173 years in prison for sexually abusing patients. He had his first entry into the prison system decreed in August 2009. Since July 2021, the former doctor has been imprisoned in the Tremembé Penitentiary, after having his house arrest revoked by Justice.
CNN awaits a response from the São Paulo Penitentiary Administration Secretariat regarding the detainee’s transfer.
