Its member countries NATO will provide to Ukraine “heavy and more modern weapons” to help it counter Russian attacks, the alliance’s secretary general announced today, Jens Stoltenberg.
“The contact group on Ukraine will meet (on Friday) in Ramstein (the US base in Germany) and the main message will be our increased support, with heavy and more modern weapons,” Stoltenberg told the Davos Economic Forum.
These discussions will focus on the delivery of armored and modern air defense systems.
Britain has already promised to provide 14 Challenger 2 tanks and Poland says it is ready to send 14 German-made Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine if Berlin gives permission for their delivery. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, in his own speech earlier, made no mention of this issue.
“It would be very dangerous to underestimate Russia. Vladimir Putin is planning new attacks and is ready to sacrifice his youth. It has recruited more than 200,000 fighters and buys weapons from authoritarian regimes such as Iran. The situation is urgent. Ukraine needs more support. This is a battle for our values. Democracy must defeat tyranny,” Stoltenberg stressed in his speech.
