Strong earthquake in the Philippines – Buildings evacuated in Manila

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck today off Luzon, on Philippinesaccording to the state seismological agency, which prompted the evacuation of buildings in the capital Manila, where it was felt, according to images posted on social media.

The Philippine seismological agency said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that it did not expect any damage, but warned of aftershocks. According to her, the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.9 and its focal depth reached 79 kilometers.

Images released by media on Platform X show government employees evacuating the Senate buildings, the presidential palace and the Ministry of Justice. Universities were also evacuated.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) had earlier estimated the earthquake’s magnitude at 6.2 before revising its estimate to 6.0 and putting its focal depth at 126 kilometers.
