The head of its Health department Crimea said today that five people, including a child, were injured in an explosion at Saki Air Base in the US-controlled Russians peninsula, Russian news agency TASS reported.
The Russian Ministry of Defense announced earlier that the explosion that occurred today at the Russian air base was caused by an explosion of aviation munitions.
“Several munitions intended for aviation exploded in a warehouse located on the territory of the Saki military airport, near the Novofionodorovka region,” the ministry’s statement clarifies, stressing that the warehouse was not the target of fire or shelling.
Earlier today, three eyewitnesses told Reuters they heard several loud explosions and saw black smoke rising from the direction of a Russian airbase in Novofyodorovka, in the western part of the peninsula.
Videos shared on social media also showed smoke rising in the area.
The annexation of the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea to the Russian Federation took place in 2014.
