When a good heart and intelligence do their thing, great things can be created, just meet this group of high school students who did everything they could to change a man’s life.
Until now, Jeremy King could not go out for a walk with his little son, as his condition in a wheelchair prevents him from pushing his baby’s stroller as he would like, but with the help of these students, who modified the chair and included a baby carrier, Jeremy can go out with his son for long walks.
About three years ago, Jeremy King, 37, underwent surgery because he had a brain tumor. When it was removed, his life was saved, but it left several sequelae, including lack of movement in his legs.
The wheelchair became his most important tool, but also the one that prevented him from doing certain activities, such as pushing his child’s stroller while they went for a walk. Chelsie, Jeremy’s wife, was concerned about the situation.
While you can walk a bit, you cannot safely carry a baby. So we decided, ‘okay, what do we need to make him feel like a safe parent?’ And honestly, not many ideas came up, simply because there are not many resources for parents with disabilities.
But Chelsie did not sit idly by and contacted Matt Zigler, a high school teacher who is her friend, and asked if there was a way to adapt Jeremy’s wheelchair. She did it because he teaches a class called Making for Social Good and maybe one of his students could give her an idea.
The idea of this subject is to start trying to understand the problem, so we did interviews with the family. We spoke to someone at the local fire department who is actually trained in infant safety seat installation to try to better understand how they work.
One of the students had the idea of making a kind of support starting from a 3D modeling. Afterwards, all the boys in the class worked full time until they came up with the perfect prototype. They did everything weeks before the baby was born, because they wanted everything to be ready when the little one arrived in this world. Once they welcomed their son and left the hospital, Jeremy was able to take his son on his first family outing.
Using it was overwhelming because I never thought I could do something like this with our son. Most people can go for a walk with their family, but that’s really hard for me, most people take it for granted. I love the idea that these students got this project and it will be something that will last.
Not only will the family benefit from this creation, but many people with disabilities will too. These guys deserve a big congratulations.
