Sudan: Coup attempt failed, armed forces say

Coup attempt failed at Sudan and the situation is under control, the country’s armed forces said today in a statement read on state television.

Earlier, a member of the country’s governing council told Reuters that the Sudanese authorities had rejected an attempt. coup and the situation is under control, while the state media reported that a failed coup attempt took place early this morning in Sudan, but without mentioning who the perpetrators were.

“Everything is under control and the revolution has won,” Mohammed al-Faki Suleiman said on his Facebook account.

A government source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said an attempt was made to bring the state-run radio station in Omduurman under control during the coup attempt.

Measures are being taken to arrest the small number of people involved in the attempt, the source added.

An eyewitness said the armed forces used tanks early this morning to close a bridge over the Nile that connects Khartoum with Omdurman. However, traffic in central Khartoum was smooth today, including in the area around the General Staff of the Armed Forces.

The government of Sudan is based on a fragile power-sharing agreement reached between the armed forces and the people after the overthrow of former President Omar al-Bashir in April 2019.

The country’s transitional authorities have said they have prevented or identified previous coup attempts linked to factions loyal to Bashir.
