Suicide bomber leaves one soldier dead, six injured in Somalia

One soldier was killed and at least six others wounded in Somalia on Sunday when a suicide bomber blew himself up at a military base west of the capital Mogadishu, a military and a hospital worker told Reuters.

The bomber disguised himself as a regular soldier and joined others as they entered a military base before detonating the explosive, Captain Aden Omar revealed.

“We lost one soldier and several others were wounded. The suicide bomber blew himself up at a checkpoint,” he declared.

A nurse at the Madina hospital in Mogadishu told Reuters she had taken in one dead soldier and six others wounded.

It was not immediately clear who carried out the attack, but the Islamist group Al Shabaab frequently carries out bomb and gun attacks in Somalia and elsewhere.

The al Qaeda-allied group wants to overthrow Somalia’s central government and establish its own government based on its own strict interpretation of Islamic sharia law.
