SUS now accepts self-declaration of ethnicity, sexual orientation and gender identity

Starting this Monday (08), the population can self-declare race/color and social name in the Meu SUS Digital application, and sexual orientation It is gender identity in the registration form of any Basic Health Unit (UBS).

The measure by the Ministry of Health seeks to give users autonomy to register their personal information and improve healthcare for all Brazilians with equity. The goal is to improve the mapping of health conditions of different groups in society and enable specific public policies in the Unified Health System (SUS).

The data is integrated with the National Registry of SUS Users (CadSUS). Through the system, updates via the application reach the UBSs.

How to self-declare

  • Access the application,
  • Answer the self-declaration
  • To edit the race/color field or update your social name and address, go to the “My Profile” tab. In “Self-Declaration Record” correct or include new information.

To make the self-declaration, the user will need to have an account with a Gold or Silver Trust Seal on GOV.BR, if the citizen has a bronze level account.

Update of sexual orientation fields

In Basic Health Units (UBSs), the sexual orientation and gender identity fields on the citizen information registration form are mandatory questions, asked by professionals during health care, with respect for the autonomy of users, who can choose whether or not to do not answer them according to the Ministry.

Seven sexual orientations can be chosen:

  • Heterosexual
  • Gay,
  • Lesbian
  • Bisexual
  • Asexual
  • Pansexual
  • Other

Seven gender identities can be chosen

  • cisgender man
  • cisgender woman
  • Transgender man
  • Transgender woman
  • Transvestite
  • Binary good
  • Other

Registration data is updated periodically. The goal is to contribute to better LGBTQIAPN+ health care, according to the department.
