On Wednesday morning (16), a 42-year-old woman was arrested in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, suspected of having killed a 25-year-old pregnant woman identified as Paula.
According to delegate Graziela Zanelli, the person on duty who responded to the case last night (15), the suspicion is that the woman committed the murder with the aim of pretending that she was the child’s mother.
Paula’s disappearance had been reported to the police by her family on Monday (14), at night.
At the time, the suspect allegedly called the victim to her house with the promise of donating a baby stroller. Paula’s family lived in the same condominium as the one being investigated. “Everything leads us to believe that [o crime] it was extremely premeditated”, argues the delegate.
On Tuesday night, the police were called to go to Grupo Hospitalar Conceição, in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, where, according to the medical team, a woman had claimed that she had gone into labor, which was incompatible with the exams that were carried out on the patient in question.
After the call, upon arriving at the suspect’s house, the investigation found Paula’s body wrapped in blankets and a plastic bag, under the suspect’s bed.
Paula had two injuries to her head and an injury to her abdomen, where the baby’s body was removed. According to experts, the delay in removing the baby from the woman’s body may have resulted in the death of the fetus. It is not yet known which instrument was used to kill the victim.
At the suspect’s home, the police found the room where the murder took place clean, which indicates that the woman had cleaned it to leave no trace of the crime.
In the living room, she allegedly faked the birth of the child and, soon after, called a neighbor asking for help. The police did not identify other people who may have collaborated in the crime.
For the delegate, “there was a determination [da suspeita] that she would have a child, regardless of who it was.”
Since August, the suspect had convinced family members, including her husband, and friends that she was pregnant. According to her husband, she has two children, but had lost babies before and was frustrated about it.
Other facts indicate premeditation. According to the police, the suspect approached the victim on her birthday, with the intention that the child would be born on the same day as her.
Furthermore, the victim’s contact with the woman only occurred at the end of the pregnancy. Paula’s family was unaware of their friendship.
The prisoner, who has already been indicted by the Civil Police, chose to remain silent during her testimony. Her husband was interviewed by the investigation, but has already been released.
There is still no information about whether she tried to attract other women to commit the same crime. Now, the material seized from the house must be examined.
