Suspected case of the Ômicron variant is ruled out in Rio de Janeiro

The analysis carried out by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation ruled out the suspicion of a patient being infected by the Ômicron variant in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

This was the first suspected case of the strain originating in South Africa in the state.

According to the Municipal Health Department, the 29-year-old woman was actually contaminated by the Delta variant, which is still prevalent in Rio de Janeiro.

The patient, who had already received two doses of Pfizer’s immunizing agent, arrived from South Africa on the 21st.

The flight made stops in Johannesburg, Ethiopia, São Paulo, before arriving in Rio de Janeiro. Even without symptoms, she tested positive for Covid on the 29th.

The exam was redone and the material was sent to Fiocruz for the sequencing. According to the State Health Department, the woman was traveling with her husband, who tested negative.

All contacts with people made since the landing were monitored and no one was contaminated.

In Brazil, five cases of the Ômicron variant have been confirmed so far. Three in São Paulo and two in Brasília. A suspect is still under investigation in Minas Gerais.
