Sweden will introduce for the first time from December 1 a health pass, which will be the demonstration of a vaccination certificate, for events of more than 100 people, in the face of the outbreak of infections in Europe, the government announced today.
The Nordic country, which had decided on November 1 not to perform diagnostic tests on fully vaccinated people against Covid-19, even if they showed symptoms, also decided to reverse this widely criticized decision.
Although Sweden currently has few cases compared to many European countries, “it is not isolated from the rest of the world,” Health Minister Lena Halengren said at a news conference.
Very young people will not be required to show a vaccination certificate – the government is still expected to choose what the age limit will be, 16 or 18 years old.
Events that apply the measure will be excluded from other restrictions.
The implementation of the measure is not mandatory, the government explained. But the organizer of an event of more than 100 people who will not implement it, will then suffer other stricter measures.
Restaurants and bars are currently excluded.
Sweden differentiated itself in the coronavirus crisis by not imposing a quarantine measure and adopting a strategy based on recommendations rather than coercive measures, with very limited use of the mask of protection in public places.
A law allowed the introduction of a vaccination pass but this was not introduced outside of international travel.
In Sweden, all its restrictions against Covid were lifted at the end of September due to the progress of its vaccination program and the good epidemiological situation.
The country is currently experiencing an incidence of 85.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days, according to the World Health Organization, one of the lowest rates in Europe and far from the epidemiological picture of its neighbors. Norway and Denmark, which are experiencing an outbreak of most cases following the lifting of most of their health measures.
