Swedish PM: I am ready to start NATO accession negotiations when Turkey is ready

That he is ready to start negotiations for her again accession of his country to NATO it is just ready and Turkey was assured on Tuesday (7/2) by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson.

Finland and Sweden they applied to join the Alliance shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine last year, and while most NATO members have approved their applications, Turkey has yet to give the go-ahead.

The three countries reached an agreement last year to move forward, but Ankara suspended negotiations in January after a far-right politician in Sweden burned a copy of the Koran.

“The first thing we need to do is de-escalate the situation. It’s hard to have good talks when things are literally burning around you,” Christerson said during a press conference during his visit to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, according to the Athens News Agency.

“The conditions for the resumption of talks are good”

The Swedish prime minister pointed out that the conditions for the resumption of talks are good, but added that with Turkish elections in May it is understandable that Ankara has focused on domestic politics.

“Once they’re ready (for talks), we’re obviously prepared,” Christerson said.

Last week the Turkey had pointed out that he views Finland’s application positively, but does not support Sweden’s, although both Nordic countries wish to join NATO at the same time.

Finnish President Sauli Niinisto said today that he hopes his country and Sweden will quickly become members of the Alliance.

“The goal is to be accepted as soon as possible, both Finland and Sweden” Niinisto pointed out during a joint press conference in Helsinki with the governor general of Canada.

Finland and Sweden are proceeding with full “mutual understanding” and remain in close contact with NATO headquarters, the White House and Turkey, the Finnish president underlined.

The Prime Minister of Estonia, Kaja Kalas, for her part, estimated that the wider Baltic region would benefit from the accession of the two Nordic countries to NATO. “For the security of our region, it would be better if both countries joined (NATO)”, he pointed out.
