According to Dr. Gabriel Heaton, Sotheby’s English Literature and Historical Manuscript Specialist, auction on July 9 will show the creative development of the poet, her love for Hughes and the sense of humor that distinguished her. In the 32 letters that will be sold including those he wrote to Hughes in October 1956 and others he sent to his relatives by 1961.
“This is the beginning of this relationship, when she was very much in love. She was excited about their relationship and their future. “But it also shows the strong sense of their literary collaboration and how they worked together and thought together,” said Gabriel Heaton. The family album, which also sells at auction, records Plath and Hughes’ travels to America and features photos from Lake Yellowstone tours with friends, such as T.S. Eliot.
