SYRIZA-PS for the occupation of Greek-owned ships in Iran

“The seizure of Greek-owned ships in Iran is an unacceptable and reprehensible act. International law does not legitimize such ‘retaliation’ that lies outside of international legitimacy, whatever the objections of the Iranian government,” SYRIZA-PS stressed.

The official opposition underlines in a statement that “the government should give absolute priority to ensuring the safety of the Greek sailors, mobilizing the European institutions in order to put pressure on Iran to release the ships.

He notes that “because full respect for international law must be the basis and limits of our foreign policy, it must further provide a detailed explanation of the legal framework for the detention of Russian ships and the transhipment of cargo to ships of American interest.” “. In particular, SYRIZA continues:

“1. To inform about the legal basis of the request for legal assistance from the USA. It is reminded that the sanctions imposed by the latter on Iran after their withdrawal from the international denuclearization agreement are not considered legal by the European Union and Greece.

2. To clarify on what legal basis the ship remained detained at the time between the revocation of the initial decision of seizure by the Anti-Crime Revenue Authority and the decision of the Single Member Court of First Instance of Chalkida to satisfy the American request.

3. To inform about the environmental risks created by the transfer of oil to other ships in the area of Karystos and what measures have been taken to protect the marine environment “.

SYRIZA-PS emphasizes that “in any case, our country has traditionally been a force of mild power, interlocutor and honest mediator between all the countries of the Middle East” and that “our diplomacy should regain its multidimensional character, far from logic of the ‘faithful and given’ and the advanced outpost “.
