SYRIZA – Progressive Alliance is launching an attack against ND MP and former minister Charalambos Athansiou for his statements related to the issue of surveillance, calling on Prime Minister and president of ND Kyriakos Mitsotakis to dismiss him.
“ND parliamentarian, vice-president of the Parliament and former Minister of Justice Mr. Charalambos Athanasiou, in a crescendo of intolerance, stated in his interview that the monitoring of Greek Muslim MPs is justified for reasons of national security.
Mr. Athanasiou should have known that “national security” concerns the intervention of a third country in the internal affairs of Greece or participation in criminal activities. It does not and cannot concern the religion of Greek citizens or parliamentarians. Mr. Athanasiou essentially claims that those who are not Orthodox Christians are nationally dangerous.
In fact, Mr. Athanasiou stated unequivocally what Mr. Mitsotakis hinted at in his speech, attempting to cover up the dangerous actions of his Government with references to national security and “dark forces”.
In their attempt to justify the perversion they have devised, they bring back theories of “internal enemies” from the darkest times of Greek history.
Mr. Mitsotakis must dismiss Mr. Athanasiou today. Otherwise, he will prove that he himself is the submitter of such unacceptable statements,” notes Koumoundourou.
