SYRIZA: Votes against the reconstruction projects in Mati

SYRIZA does not vote on the plan for the reconstruction of Mati and the fire-affected areas of Eastern Attica as a whole, and calls on the government to withdraw the relevant memorandum of cooperation between Greece and Cyprus.

Specifically, as for the memorandum itself, the official opposition demanded the withdrawal of the relevant bill as, as noted by the parliamentary representative of SYRIZA, Socrates Famellos, the initial Athens-Nicosia consultation in 2018, provided for the non- , while, in the introduced bill, the possibility of operating a night club in a forest area is given. “For a major political scandal of ignorance or misuse of resources,” said former Parliament Speaker Nikos Voutsis, while the minority rapporteur Christos Spirtzis stressed that the government does not want to invest in public health.

For his part, the Speaker of Parliament, Konstantinos Tassoulas, described the management of the special aid account for the victims of the fires of July 23 and 24, 2018, which is kept at the Bank of Greece and is managed by the Parliament and the Ministers of State, Infrastructure and Finance.

Positioned in the context of the debate in the Plenary Session of the Parliament, for the ratification of the Athens-Nicosia memorandum, which concerns the financial donation of Cyprus, in order to implement infrastructure projects in the fire-affected areas of Eastern Attica (construction of social housing in Rafina and landscaping ), Mr. Tassoulas said that, out of the approximately 37 million euros that were originally in the account, today there are about 24.4 million euros, while 6.9 million euros have been disbursed until the elections of ’19 and 7, 5 million euros after the ’19 elections. As he noted, in the special account, in which the Parliament also participates, management audits were carried out by certified accountants for the years ’18, ’19 and ’20, from which it was found that the procedures were followed, while the fiscal year 2021 is expected to be audited. “We are not satisfied with the internal audit but the audit results and all the report material are sent to the Court of Auditors for further repressive audit. Therefore, the legality aspect is guaranteed,” said Mr. Tassoulas.

The Speaker of Parliament, as earlier and the present Deputy Minister of Spatial Planning and Urban Environment, Nikos Tagaras, said that since 7/18/2019 about 821 thousand euros have been allocated for the payment of 11 studies assigned to (or through him) TEE for implementation of the special urban plan, approximately 550 thousand euros covered by compensation for the restoration of space and legal fencing of the victims and about 6.2 million euros to meet the need to implement the second phase of the special urban plan “which is the high cost”.

Commenting on the positions of the official opposition, Mr. Tagaras explained that the ratified memorandum was drafted after cooperation between the Hellenic Republic and the Republic of Cyprus and that there were consultations with the mayors of the region.
