Taiwan negotiates alternative aviation routes due to Chinese military exercises

Taiwan is negotiating with neighboring Japan and the Philippines to find alternative aviation routes after China announced military exercises around the island, its state news agency reported on Wednesday.

China’s military announced Tuesday that it would carry out military activities around Taiwan in response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the island, along with a series of “military operations aimed at defusing the situation.” ,” according to statements released by the Chinese government.

Taiwan’s Department of Maritime and Ports issued three warnings on Wednesday, urging ships to use alternate routes to seven ports around the island.

Taiwan officials said China’s military exercises amounted to a “sea and air blockade” and “violated Taiwan’s territorial waters and its contiguous zone.”

Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Sun Li-fang said China’s planned “irrational” activities “threaten international waterways, challenge international order, undermine the cross-strait status quo and put jeopardize regional security”.
