The sailing ship Cisne Branco, one of the best-known vessels in the Brazilian Navy, has been stopped in the port of Lisbon for more than two months due to a breakdown that has reduced its maneuverability.
The problem occurred on June 11, when the ship arrived in Portugal. A part inside the propeller broke, making it difficult for the Cisne Branco to move precisely. This piece of equipment is essential for the sailboat to be able to perform maneuvers such as entering and leaving a port.
The equipment assists the vessel in docking and undocking maneuvers. The Navy reported that the problem is not related to maintenance that the ship underwent before traveling.
However, the White Swan’s journey around Europe, which would have lasted around eight months and passed through 23 ports in 13 countries, had to be interrupted.
The forecast is that the Cisne Branco will remain docked at least until September 15th and will only return to Brazil at the end of October.
On Wednesday (28), the Navy officially announced in the Official Gazette of the Union the hiring of the company Black Bull Logistics SL to provide “port support services” during its stay in Portugal, meeting the logistical needs of the Cisne Branco. The hiring will cost 73.7 thousand euros, around R$ 452 thousand at the current exchange rate.
The Cisne Branco, valued at 15 million dollars, was incorporated in 2000 for the celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the Discovery of Brazil.
The ship is a replica of the “19th century galleys”, is 76 meters long, has 25 sails and travels at 11 knots.
With a crew of 9 officers, 41 sailors and 31 apprentices, the vessel has diplomatic functions, representing the Navy and Brazil in national and international nautical events.
