Thailand: The first death from the Omicron variant occurred

Thailand has reported the first death from a highly contagious variant of the Omicron coronavirus, a health official said today.

She is an 86-year-old woman from the southern province of Songhla. Thailand recorded the first case of the variant last month and therefore restored the mandatory quarantine for foreign visitors.

“The woman was bedridden and suffering from Alzheimer’s,” Health Ministry spokesman Rungrueng Kitpaty told Reuters.

He said Omicron was expected to die as the country has so far recorded more than 10,000 cases of the variant.

He added that no additional restrictive measures would be needed.

Thailand today reported 8,077 new cases and 9 deaths, bringing the number of cases since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020 to 2.3 million and the number of deaths to almost 22,000.

Nearly 66% of the approximately 72 million inhabitants have been vaccinated with two doses of coronavirus and about 14.9% with a booster dose.
