The reopening of the borders in summer had very moderate effects in the Balearic Islands compared to the rest of the autonomous communities. The archipelago came out the third quarter of the year being the fourth community by the tail in the percentage of visits by national residents, and that despite the fact that this was a key asset after the sudden stop of foreign tourism. For better and for worse, insularity was – and continues to be – a key factor in containing visitor flows amid the pandemic. Also in the opposite direction: Balearic citizens were the least active in tourism during the same period.
The latter is also due to the conditions of the current season, which led to that a large part of the trips of the Balearic residents were limited to the islands themselves. Inland and local tourism has been boosted not only in Spain, but also in other countries in the European environment, including leading markets such as Germany, the United Kingdom and the Nordic countries.
Thus, according to data released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) and the Balearic Institute of Statistics (Ibestat), the percentage of national travelers who chose the Balearic Islands was only 2.4% of the total, only ahead of PaÃs Basque (2.2%), Navarra (1.5%) and La Rioja (0.9%), very shocking if we take into account that we are talking about one of the main tourist centers in the country: it registered little more than one million national tourists.
At the other extreme are Andalusia with more than nine million (20.1% of the total), Catalonia, with more than six million (13.2%) and Comunidad Valenciana with 5.7 million (12 ,5%). The other archipelago, the Canary Islands, was also ahead of the Balearic Islands with 1.7 million travelers (3.9%). Trips abroad have also been ahead (1.5 million, 3.3%) And all this taking into account that the national market has been this year the one that has been pulling the bandwagon and making up the figures before the brutal fall of international tourism.
As a parallel data, the Balearic Islands were the ones that traveled the least to other communities: 528 trips per thousand inhabitants. The most travelers are residents of the Community of Madrid (1,381 trips per thousand inhabitants), the Basque Country (1,324) and Aragón (1,070).
On the other hand, and in a year in which the income of consumers has been seriously affected, the Balearic Islands was the most expensive national destination, a factor that will have influenced its positioning among the preferences of tourists from other communities. The average daily expenditure per person was 64 euros. The Canary Islands is next in the ranking with 56 euros, followed by Catalonia and Asturias, already well below 50 euros. Murcia and Castilla y León were the destinations that recorded the lowest spending with an average of 24 euros per traveler.
Balearic tourists were also the fourth largest spenders (43 euros per person per day), only surpassed by people from La Mancha, Extremadura (both with 47 euros) and Canaries (44 euros).
