According to recent studies, 12,000,000 people suffer from insomnia in Italy: difficulty falling asleep, frequent awakenings during the night, early awakenings in the morning and difficulty returning to sleep.
According to the latest findings of the Italian Association for Sleep Medicine (AIMS), almost 1 out of 3 Italians sleep an insufficient number of hours and about 1 in 4 adults suffer from chronic or transient insomnia. Especially women, about 60% of the total. On the other hand, 20% of cases concern children and minors. Figures that, according to experts, would even double after the Covid pandemic.
In most cases, sleep disturbances lead psycho-physical discomfort upon awakening, daytime sleepiness, difficulty concentrating, memory deficits and mood disorders. Sleeping little for a long time would damage not only our cognitive abilities, but also the brain. People who sleep less than six hours a night face a higher risk of having a stroke than those who sleep more, and if chronic, the problem contributes to obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol and depression.
There are many sleep disorders though predictable or treatable and mindfulness is also a valuable aid in solving the problems of the activity that occupies a third of our lives.
“Chronic fatigue, sleep disturbances, lack of energy: these are increasingly common problems because the world we live in prompts us to never rest”, he comments Grazia Pallagrosi, Mindfulness expert and author of the best seller Easy meditation for busy humans.
«To paraphrase Thich Nhat Hanh – continues Grazia Pallagrosi – we can say that day and night in our minds a radio remains on, the Non Stop Thinking radio, which is continuously broadcasting. When we go to sleep, even if we manage to fall asleep, the radio does not turn off and wakes us up during the night or makes rest disturbed ».
How can you avoid it? Addressing the problem in its multiple causes and removing them with a synergistic action on different levels: an adequate management of mental flows during the day, the daily practice of some short anti-stress exercises and the repetition of specific meditations that retrain the mind to let go of everything that keeps it awake.
To overcome the problems related to insomnia and poor sleep, however, the bed also has its importance, and even more so the pillow. Often it seems too hard, at other times it is not supported, at times it increases the pains related to the cervical or does not allow us a correct alignment of the spinal column.
All this, in addition to being able to cause physical and postural problems in the long run, certainly does not facilitate a good sleep. Choosing the right pillow for your needs is therefore not an aspect to be neglected on the contrary, it is very important to pay attention to the purchase of the best product able to promote muscle relaxation and proper breathing.
Here then, below, the best pillows for a good sleep and fight the problems related to insomnia.
