The British BBC announced today the reopening of its English-language services in Russia, after their temporary suspension to assess the effects of the new strict legislation approved by the Russian parliament.
The BBC temporarily suspended its operation in Russia on Friday after the Russian parliament passed a law providing for a prison sentence of up to 15 years for anyone found guilty of deliberately spreading false news.
“We have considered the implications of the new legislation in parallel with the urgent need to broadcast news from Russian territory. After careful consultation, we have decided to continue broadcasting news in English from Russia tonight (Tuesday, March 8).” reports the BBC in a relevant announcement.
The BBC assures that it will continue to broadcast the developments “independently and impartially” in accordance with the strict code of conduct, emphasizing that the safety of its staff in Russia remains its top priority.
