Head-spinning tiaras, a princess bride, an opulent palace of gold and diamonds so big it could be mistaken for an ice rink. It can only mean one thing: the first royal wedding of the year has arrived.
The daughter of the Sultan of Brunei marries: at least four of her wedding dresses, for a ceremony that lasted 10 days. The most beautiful? The one that looks like it’s studded with diamonds. And that it probably really is
The Sultan of Brunei, one of the richest men in the world, spared no expense in the wedding of his daughter, the beautiful Princess “Azemah Ni”.matul Bolkiah of Brunei, who was married to his first cousin , Prince Bahar ibni Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei in the Istana Nurul Iman, the sultan’s opulent official residence, just outside the capital Bandar Seri Begawan.
Princess ‘Azemah Ni’matul Bolkiah, 38, is the eighth daughter of the sultan by his former second wife, Hajah Mariam. An accomplished athlete, the princess plays polo competitively and has campaigned for greater gender equality in sport. Not much is known about the groom, except that he is the son of Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei, the elder brother of the sultan.
The week-long festivities featured a range of events, including a traditional ‘powdering’ ceremony, an Islamic wedding and a glittering reception.
Photos from the royal wedding shared on Instagram reveal the princess’ spectacular wedding gowns, including a crystal-embellished ivory gown with matching veil. A second dress, in anthracite gray, was embellished with a massive diamond necklace with three teardrop stones as its centre. Among the tiaras worn by the princess was the spectacular Diamond Heart Tiara belonging to her stepmother, Queen Saleha.
Also among the guests was the fourth son of the Sultan of Brunei, Prince Mateen, regularly voted among the most desired royals in the world. The former student and polo player has amassed 2.1 million followers on Instagram, where he shares snaps of royal engagements, polo matches and Amalfi Coast vacations. “So happy for my dearest big sister and BJB,” he wrote, sharing wedding photos with his followers.
Another of her brothers, Prince Azim, died tragically in 2020 of an unknown disease. He was known to be an international traveller, regularly photographed partying with the likes of Mischa Barton, Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton.
The wedding comes just a year after the bride’s sister Princess Fadzillah married Awang Abdullah Nabil Mahmoud Al-Hashimi.
