The first three Special Environmental Studies for ‘Natura 2000’ are in consultation

As of today, the Special Environmental Studies (SPS), concerning protected areas “Natura 2000” in eastern Crete, Evros and Rodopi as well as the southern Peloponnese are being consulted. The NRPs set out an institutional framework for the demarcation and institutionalization of classified protection zones, setting clear terms and conditions for land use and economic activity in protected areas. Public consultation on NRPs through of the website of the Ministry of Environment and Energy will last until the end of January and will follow the elaboration of Management Plans of the protected areas with the respective Presidential Decrees.

The Ministry of Environment and Energy has commissioned the preparation of 23 Special Environmental Studies and Management Plans for the 446 areas of the “Natura 2000” network of the country.

The Special Environmental Studies, guided by the protection of the ecosystems and the species they host, will indicate if and which anthropogenic activities are allowed in the individual zones of each region.

The Management Plans will specify the criteria and conditions for exercising the allowed anthropogenic activities in the individual areas of each study. These include action plans that specify:

● the necessary measures

● projects and programs

Or the phases, the costs, the sources

● funding agencies

● the execution schedule

● the implementing bodies

The project that is being implemented for the first time in our country is extremely important, both for the protection of the natural environment and in relation to the obligations of Greece towards the European Union.

The Minister of Environment and Energy, Costas Skrekas, stated: “With the Special Environmental Studies (SPS) we create for the first time a clear framework for the protection zones and land uses in the 446 areas of the Natura 2000 network.
