The five major projects that will change the infrastructure map of Greece

Five major projects expected to change the country’s infrastructure map are already underway. These are breath-taking projects that, in addition to facilitating transport access, will facilitate freight transport, strengthen local communities and contribute to the country’s tourism development.

1. Line 4 of the Metro

One of the biggest projects that will decongest many areas of the center is line 4 of the Athens metro.

The first section of Line 4 of the Metro “Alsos Veikou – Goudi”, has been designed to serve many densely populated areas of the center of Athens.

The new line, which will have 15 stations, will serve a large number of infrastructures: Courts, Hospitals, Educational Institutions, Organizations, Ministries, Museums. According to the schedule, in the autumn when the construction of the well next to the 401 General Military Hospital will be completed, the new state-of-the-art TBMs (metropontics), which are being manufactured in Germany in the meantime, will have arrived. One metropontika will start from the well of Katehaki, the second from the well of Veikou and they will “meet” in Evangelismos.

With Line 4, citizens will go from Goudi to Kypseli in 13 minutes and from Alsos Veikou to Exarchia in 7 minutes.


Near the starting line is the construction of the Northern Road Axis of Crete (BOAK), the largest new motorway currently under construction in Europe, which will make a decisive contribution to the upgrading of Crete.

BOAK is divided into three sections: the “Chania-Heraklion” section, which will be done under a concession contract. The project concerns the study, construction, financing, operation, maintenance and operation of a section of the BOAK from Chania to Heraklion (Kombos Hersonissou), which is being upgraded to a 157 km long highway, through a Concession Agreement. It is co-financed by the Recovery and Resilience Fund, the NSRF 2021-2027 and by private funding, with a total budget of 1.6 billion. The construction duration of the project is 60 months.

The second section is the “Peninsula-Naples”, which will be done through PPP. A temporary contractor has already been announced in this department. The project is co-financed, with a total budget of 290 million euros and a construction duration of 48 months.

Finally, the section “Naples – Agios Nikolaos”, which will be built as a public project, has a budget of 186 million euros.

The project concerns the improvement-widening of the existing section Neapoli – St. Nikolaos in P.E. Lassithiou on a 4-lane artery with two traffic lanes and LEA in each direction. A temporary contractor has already been appointed, while the signing of the contract is expected at the end of September 2022.

E65 and Olympia Road (Patra – Pyrgos)

Two important projects that are expected to change the traffic map of the country, facilitating both access and transport, are the completion of the Central Greece Motorway (E65) and the Patras – Pyrgos section of the Olympia Road.

Already, work on both the southern and northern sections of the Central Greece highway is progressing rapidly, while once completed the project will form part of the wider interconnection of Greece with Europe, providing significant development benefits to our country.

On the other hand, with a completion horizon of the first half of 2025, the construction of the road axis Patras – Pyrgos is progressing, a project that was included in the Olympia Road concession contract.

With the inclusion of Patras-Pyrgos in the Concession Project, Olympia Odos now becomes the third longest highway in the country, with a total length of 277 kilometers. The new 75 kilometers of modern highway will connect the Perimetriki of Patras with the northern entrance of the city of Pyrgos.

Today, Patron-Pyrgou is an old road axis with particularly unfavorable statistics regarding road safety. With the new Patra – Pyrgos highway, millions of vehicle kilometers will now be traveled in safety, comfort and time-saving conditions.

4. Railway projects of N. Greece

The major railway projects currently underway are expected to transform Northern Greece into a commercial, economic and cultural crossroads of East and West.

The first is the Egnatia Railway. This is the huge budget project of 1.69 billion euros concerning the construction of the new railway line Thessaloniki – Nea Karvali – Toxotes Xanthi, 206 km long.

It is the largest public project of all time in Greece, with its cost even exceeding that of line 4 of the Athens Metro (1.2 billion euros)

The second is the Alexandroupoli – Ormenio railway line.
It has a budget of 1.07 billion euros and includes, among other things, the construction of about 186 km of main railway line and improvement – ​​adaptation of 15 railway stations and stops in the section “Alexandroupoli – Didymoteicho” and 19 railway stations and stops in the section “Didymoteicho – Greek-Bulgarian border”.

Finally, another major project is the railway connection of the 6th pier of the port of Thessaloniki, which will be combined with the construction of the western suburban railway of the city, upgrading transport in Northern Greece.

5. Attica Road and Suburban Extensions

After the tender for the extension of Kymi Avenue and following the tender for the concession of the Attica Road run by TAIPED, it is expected to be clarified what will happen next with the remaining three extensions of the road axis: to Lavrio, to Rafina and the western region of Ymitto until Vouliagmenis avenue.

The most basic of these is the extension of the western district of Ymitto to Elliniko, which will include an underground tunnel in Ilioupoli and new bridges on Vouliagmeni Avenue.

The Ministry’s goal for Vouliagmenis Avenue is to “liberate” it from the traffic lights and turn it into a highway that will feed road arteries such as the urban tunnel, which will act as “connecting links” between the 3 rings of the capital.

According to the plans so far, the project envisages the construction of a tunnel a little more than 3 km long, with 3 lanes per traffic flow, without exits, which will start sinking at the height of Kaisariani and will end up connecting to Vouliagmenis Avenue at the height of the borders of Agios Dimitrios and Ilioupoli, a little south of the Metro station of Agios Dimitrios. The journey will take a few minutes where today, at rush hour, it takes over 30 minutes. It is a very important project that, in combination with the redevelopment in Elliniko, will change the map of the movements of the basin.

Regarding the other two extensions of the Attica Road, the one towards Rafina provides for the bypass of Marathon Avenue and the traffic lights of the local streets and the other towards Lavrio provides for the widening of the existing road from Markopoulos to the port.

Finally, development dynamics will be created by the railway interconnection projects, via Prostiakou, between the ports of Lavrio and Rafina, promoted by ERGOSE.

These two projects that will connect the ports of Eastern Attica with the national railway network, through new suburban lines, have a total budget of 700 million euros

The extension of the suburban railway network to Lavrio and Rafina is crucial, not only for the completion of the basic mass transport infrastructure and in particular the fixed track network in Attica, but also for the achievement of the main objectives of the urban planning, spatial planning, transportation and environmental planning of the areas through which the lines pass.
