The Government will invest 4.32 billion in deploying high-speed broadband and 5G

The Government foresees an investment in 5G for five years of 4,320 million euros of public investment, 883 million of these already foreseen in the Budgets for 2021, with the aim of mobilizing a private investment of 24,000 million euros, such and as explained by the Minister of Finance and spokesperson MarÃa Jesús Montero, after the meeting of the Council of Ministers held this Tuesday.

The investment contemplated by the executive is divided into two parts: the Plan for Connectivity and Infrastructures Digital society, economy and territories and the Strategy to promote the development of 5G technology.

Reach 100 megabits

The first of the points, the connectivity plan focused on infrastructures, contemplates an investment of 2,320 million euros until 2025, of which 583 million were already raised in the PGE pending approval and corresponding to next year. The aforementioned plan aims to expand the coverage of high-speed broadband to 100% of the population, according to Montero “an ambitious challenge”, but “viable and achievable”.

In other words, the objective is to make available to the entire population a connection speed of 100 megabits per second, which today is only accessible to 84% of the population – in 2021 it will already rise to 91% of cover just by carrying out deployments launched.

The focus will inevitably be placed on emptied Spain, rural areas where fiber optic coverage remains at 46% of the population. Even so, the data is higher than that accredited today by other European nations, such as France (12%), Germany (6%) and the United Kingdom (6%). In fact, the Spanish fiber optic network stands out as one of the most important meshes in the world.

The new mobile generation

The 5G Strategy includes investments of 2,000 million euros until 2025 -300 million are already collected in the PGE project for 2021-. The goals are to reach 75% of the Spanish population with 5G coverage -Telefónica has ensured that it will achieve this this year without waiting for 2025- and to make the new mobile technology accessible without interruption in airports, railways and major roads of the country.

“Connectivity and 5G have been identified as levers of recovery and drivers of digital transformation in the Annual Strategy for Sustainable Development of the European Union. They are also highlighted in the EU Recovery and Resilience Mechanism and in the Plan of Recovery, Transformation and Resilience of the Spanish economy, presented on October 7, and that will allocate 33% of its funds to digitization”The Executive recalled in a statement on the matter.
