The Government raises the quota for the self-employed to 24 euros amid a plummet in economic activity

The Government has applied in full pandemic and recession the rise to the Social Security self-employed contributions that was agreed for the period from 2019 to 2021. This will affect how self-employed they will pay between 6 and 24 euros more than in September. The figure is temporary, since the quota will grow again in January between 3 and 12 euros, as foreseen in the agreement. Specifically, the rates of contribution by professional contingencies and cessation of activity.

Lorenzo Love, President of the National Federation of Associations of Self-Employed Workers (ATA), asks that “the Government have a gesture of sensitivity and postpone it until there is a recovery”, and recalls that “it is not about not paying.”

The rise affects one of the sectors hardest hit by restrictions to activity and the economic crisis that has caused the pandemic. The VIII ATA Barometer reveals that the group has endured 60,000 million euros of losses in 2020. In total, 84.8% of the 3.2 million self-employed in Spain say they have seen their income fall.

“There are a million self-employed workers, 28.8%, whose losses have exceeded 30,000 euros since the beginning of the year” lamented Amor en La Noche en 24 hours.

The group has repeatedly asked the Government measures to protect your activity and employment. This year, more than half a million freelancers have requested the cessation of activity and another 450,000 expect to cut jobs.

However, ATA requests such as suspending any tax increase, the creation of new taxes or the reduction of VAT have been ignored.

For its part, Nadia Calvio, Minister of Economic Affairs, has spoken of facilitating access and return time of the ICO credits and the Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, Josà © Luis Escriva, has called on the self-employed associations to meet in January 2021 to study the situation.

“The level of empathy we have and the commitment that all of us must have with the difficult situation that the self-employed are going through during this period is extraordinary,” said Escrivá.
