The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) detained a hacker who created an automated network (botnet) of more than 100,000 fake accounts, using it to carry out DDoS and spam attacks, as well as to hack websites.
In addition to cyberattacks and hacking sites, he was engaged in the selection of passwords for e-mail boxes. He found customers on closed forums and in Telegram chats, and made settlements with “clients” through electronic payment systems prohibited in Ukraine.
The SBU managed to detain him using an account that he registered with the Russian digital payment service WebMoney. The hacker provided his real address there, which helped the Ukrainian authorities track him down.
During the searches conducted at the addresses of registration and actual residence of the attacker, computer equipment with evidence of illegal activity was seized. Now the botnet organizer is preparing a report of suspicion under Part 2 of Art. 361-1 (creation for the purpose of using, distributing or selling harmful software or hardware) and Art. 363-1 (obstruction of the operation of electronic computers (computers), automated systems, computer networks or telecommunication networks through the mass distribution of telecommunication messages) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
