The head of Myanmar’s military regime began an unannounced visit to Russia yesterday, where he is expected to hold meetings with officials in the nuclear power and aerospace industries, a Russian news agency reported.
Min Aung Hlaing attended the opening of a pagoda at a Burmese cultural center in the Kaluga region, 200 kilometers southwest of Moscow, on Tuesday, RIA Novosti reported.
Russian Deputy Minister of Defense Alexander Famin attended this ceremony, according to the same source.
The head of Myanmar’s military junta was then expected to travel to the Russian capital for meetings with the head of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, a figure in Vladimir Putin’s inner circle, and representatives of the Russian atomic energy agency Rosatom, RIA added Novosti, without specifying the dates of these meetings.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said for his part that President Vladimir Putin is not expected to meet Min Aung Hlaing in person.
Myanmar underwent a military coup on February 1, 2021, followed by deadly fighting between the armed forces and minority rebel and paramilitary organizations of the “People’s Defense Forces”. The country’s economy has collapsed.
Its leader’s visit to Moscow came two days after the US vowed to keep up pressure on the military regime.
Russia, which has been isolated internationally because of its military incursion into Ukraine, has increased its support for Myanmar’s military junta, to which it mainly sells weapons.
In March, Russian servicemen took part in a military parade honoring Myanmar’s armed forces for the second consecutive year.
