The Israeli prime minister met with President Putin in Moscow

LAST UPDATE: 21.12

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett met today in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the crisis in Ukraine, his spokesman said.

This is the first time since the invasion of Ukraine on February 24 that a foreign leader has visited Moscow. Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was in Russia the day after the attack, but that visit was long overdue.

Israel, which hosts a significant population of Russian immigrants, has offered to mediate in the war between Russia and Ukraine, although officials have previously downgraded expectations for a major development.

Israel, a close ally of the United States, condemned the Russian invasion and expressed solidarity with Kyiv by sending humanitarian aid to Ukraine. At the same time, however, he said he would maintain contact with Moscow, hoping to help ease the crisis.

Israel is also taking into account Moscow’s military assistance to neighboring Syria, where the Israeli army often hits targets in Iran and Hezbollah. Contacts with Moscow help prevent an accidental exchange of fire between Russian and Israeli forces in the region.

Bennett, a devout Jew, broke Saturday’s rule and traveled by air because it is permissible if the purpose is to preserve human life, a spokesman said.
