The Kremlin said on Tuesday that French claims that Russian President Vladimir Putin had promised his French counterpart Emanuel Macron that Moscow would not take any new military initiatives around Ukraine at this time were “untrue”, according to Reuters.
A French official said Putin had made that promise during talks with Macron in Moscow yesterday.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov said Russia and France had not yet reached an agreement on de-escalation of tensions over Ukraine, but noted that de-escalation was necessary and that the meeting provided the basis for further negotiations on this front.
According to the same French official, Putin also agreed that troops taking part in a military exercise on Belarusian territory near the Ukrainian border would be withdrawn as soon as the exercises end on February 20.
Peshkov noted that the troops would return to their bases in Russia after the exercises, without giving an exact date, but noted that no one had ever said that the forces would remain in Belarus.
