A man who today, as it seems, was holding a carbine around his neck, threatening to commit suicide, near the United Nations headquarters in Manhattan, is now under police detention and is not a threat, became known by the police department of the city of New York.
Footage broadcast live on television shows the man being handed over to police outside the fence that surrounds the United Nations complex on Manhattan’s East Side.
“This man is now in custody and there is NO THREAT to the public,” the New York Police Department wrote in a Twitter message.
The UN compound was temporarily cordoned off today as police responded to the incident. Before surrendering, the man started walking back and forth near the fence and left some notebooks on the sidewalk, which were taken by heavily armed police officers.
After police diverted traffic from the area, members attempted to engage in a dialogue with the man, who appeared to be in his 60s, according to a New York police spokesman.
The man “threatened to commit suicide”, a UN official had previously said, who did not want to be named.
At the moment, the police have not given any details about the man’s motives.
