Carla Viganò was 74 years old and on Monday 9 January she was taking her eight-year-old grandson to school. She was run over on the pedestrian crossing in Casatenovo, in the Lecco area, by a truck. The child, protected by his grandmother, is unharmed. Only in the province of Lecco is he the second victim in less than 24 hours: on Sunday evening in Merate, 87-year-old Carlo Fumagalli was run over by a small car driven by a pensioner from Monza. In Italy they are only the latest innocent victims of the road.
There were 14 deaths in the first 7 days of 2023, two every day and the numbers have already grown. The data comes from ASAPS, the Association of Friends and Supporters of the Traffic Police. Among the victims were two girls aged 4 and 10 (Valentina and her family stopped in the hard shoulder due to a breakdown and while the little girl was getting out of the car she was run over by another oncoming car), but also you are over 65 years old. There are two cases of piracy, one of which with a minor driving. In Calabria there are three pedestrians dead in a week. In Iseo, a boy was run over by two cars as he reached friends. His parents accompanied him. He was 16 years old. On Saturday evening, a 44-year-old nurse was run over on the Rome-Civitavecchia road where he had stopped to provide assistance.
Again according to ASAPS data 307 pedestrians died last year on Italian roads, an average of 25 people a month, almost one a day. This is still a preliminary estimate that does not count the deaths that occurred in the hospital after some time. In 2021 there were 271 pedestrians killed, in 2020 240. In 2022 the over 65s were the people most at risk, but 14 minors also died, most of them run over on the pedestrian crossing with their parents.
Driving the car that killed Francesco Valdiserri, last October, there was a 23-year-old woman who had a blood alcohol level three times higher than the legal limit. Only after urgent health checks are many motorists impaired when driving, in the 307 deaths of the preliminary ASAPS estimate for 2022, it was ascertained in the immediate event of the accident that in 22 cases the driver was drunk, and in 10 cases he had taken drugs, in as many as 42 accidents the driver has fled, it means that every 7 fatal accidents with pedestrians, one is caused by a hit-and-run driver.
