The #MeToo of the advertising world, hundreds of women tell about the abuse

After the cinema, the advertising sector. Hundreds of women who work there have reported being raped, harassed and discriminated against after the blog «Mad Man, Furious Women», di Zoe Scaman, founder of the marketing and advertising agency Bodacious, opened the debate, launching a kind of #MeToo of advertising. Scaman revealed that she was inundated with emails from women around the world talking about sexist comments in meetings, outright sexual assaults and violence.

In his blog he reported the contents of some of those emails, omitting names and details that would have allowed the victims to be identified.

One woman claims she was sexually assaulted when she was 24 by her own boss, who followed her to the bathroom, to then suggest to “forget”, as if what happened had been “consensual or reciprocal”. “It was neither one thing nor the other,” he wrote. Another turned out to be paid £ 20,000 less than a colleague a man of equal seniority and experience, while yet another, who had a high-level role, explained that she had been fired when she was pregnant six months. Many women also reported having very explicit sexual advances from clients.

But even though the women who contacted Scarman were furious, many didn’t want their stories posted online: “I’m absolutely terrified of the consequences of the truth about the abuses they have suffered, ”he explained. “They know they risk being kicked out or silenced with nondisclosure agreements. While violent men continue to be successful, continue to be the head of these agencies ».

Scaman decided to start the blog after meeting another ad, who had just moved to London. “We both have horrible stories behind us,” he said. “And it’s not about the 80s and 90s: these things are happening now.”

According to the advertising, even if misogyny and discrimination creep into every sector, the “non-conformist” nature of advertising makes it an even more difficult and dangerous area for women. «The idea of ’life outside the rules of society’ means that illicit behavior is dismissed as bad behavior, ‘just what happens in advertisements’».
