Sometimes it happens that one Luna shrouded in mist appears colorful. It happens thanks to an effect called the crown. Crowns are colored rings which, when the sky is veiled by a light layer of clouds, are seen around the sun, moon, and rarely even around bright stars or planets.
NASA has chosen as the astronomical photo of the day, theAstronomy Picture of the Day, a hazy and almost fairytale moon that appears colorful, flanked by Jupiter and Saturn clearly visible in the sky above Pieve di Cadore, in the Dolomites.
The photograph was taken on 17 December by photographer Alessandra Masi.
It is the first Italian astronomical shot selected by Nasa del 2021. In 2020 it was the turn of six Italians.
NASA explains that the corona phenomenon is given by the mechanism of diffraction of light around the water droplets present in cloudy layers, mostly transparent and thin. It is easily seen even with the naked eye. The photo was taken a few days before the great conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn on December 21st.
In the photo appears the illuminated village of Pieve di Cadore and you can also see the mountains that surround it. Alessandra Masi is a native of Pieve di Cadore and has been dedicating herself to photography for about ten years.
In 2021 there is an unmissable appointment with the Moon, the Superluna of May 26. It will be one Full moon near the perigee, that is, not far from the point of its orbit closest to the Earth. This is why it will appear larger and brighter than usual. A total lunar eclipse is expected on the same day, but will be seen only far from Europe: Australia, United States and western South America and Southeast Asia.
