It wasn’t aliens or fireworks! Blue spiral light spotted by Japan’s Subaru Telescope on Hawaii’s Mauna Kea is associated with a rocket SpaceX.
The Subaru-Asahi Star Camera, operated by the National Observatory of Japan, captured the strange spiral above the mountaintop observatory on January 18.
“The spiral appears to be related to the launch of a new satellite by the company SpaceX,” the Observatory staff tweeted, according to Forbes.
SpaceX, founded by controversial Tesla and Twitter CEO Elon Musk, has become a go-to img for strange lights spotted in the sky in recent years.
In the case of the coil at Hawaii, however, appears to be related to a Falcon 9 that was on its way to deliver a new GPS satellite into orbit. Space industry observers recognize the pattern as the product of a rotating second stage that vents excess fuel.
