At CES 2023, AMD announced a whole bunch of new processors for laptops and desktop computers. The most noteworthy announcement was the AMD Ryzen 7040 series of mobile processors for ultrabooks, which, according to the manufacturer, should compete with the Apple M1 Pro and M2 chips.
The AMD Ryzen 7040 series are processors based on the 4nm process technology. At the head is the Ryzen 9 7940HS model with 8 cores, 16 threads and an increased frequency of 5.2 GHz. Introducing this processor, AMD CEO Lisa Su stated that it is 30% faster than the Apple M1 Pro. In particular, the company claims that in specific tasks, the Ryzen 9 7940HS outperforms the M1 Pro in multi-core tests by 34%, and in tasks involving artificial intelligence bypasses the M2 by 20%.
One of the cornerstones of Apple processors is energy efficiency. In this area, AMD has achieved significant results. The AMD Ryzen 7040 series is capable of delivering over 30 hours of video playback on ultrabooks. With built-in Ryzen AI engine, AMD chips are 20% faster in AI tasks than Apple M2 and 50% more power efficient.
To demonstrate the full power of the new mobile processor, AMD compared the performance of the Core i7 1280P, M1 Pro and Ryzen 9 7940HS when rendering an object in the popular Blender application. In the video that was shown at the presentation, ‌Intel and Apple processors lag behind the AMD chip.
It’s worth noting that AMD was considering a MacBook Pro configuration with an ‌M1 Pro‌, 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD, while Apple’s most powerful laptop chip is the M1 Max. It also needs to be recalled that the M1 Pro‌ was introduced over a year ago, and the AMD Ryzen 7040 series will only become available for commercial laptops in March 2023. Rumor has it that in the coming months, Apple will announce the next generation of high-performance processors – ‌M2‌ Pro and ‌M2‌ Max, which will be equipped with updated models of 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro.
