The number of COVID-19 cases in hospitals appears to be increasing

The executive director of UK National Health Service (NHS) Matthew Taylor warned on Wednesday that the number of COVID-19 cases in hospitals appears to be increasing.

Featured statements

“The intense pressure on the health service is only going to get worse in winter.”

“The health service is at the limit.”

“If we are under more pressure, we will not be able to provide the level of service that people need.”

Separately, the UK business secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng, ruled out another winter lockdown.

Kwarteng said: “I would rule that out. Talks about more travel restrictions or more roadblocks are completely useless.”

Market reaction

Amid weaker UK CPI inflation and a covid resurgence, GBP / USD is pulling back below 1.3800.

The pair last stood at 1.3784, down 0.09% on a daily basis.
