The Palestinians gained more rights at the WHO

The member countries of the World Health Organization (WHO) decided yesterday Friday 31/5 to give additional rights to the Palestinians, echoing a similar decision taken earlier in May by the UN General Assembly. Member countries meeting this week for the World Health Assembly – the WHO's highest decision-making body – voted overwhelmingly in favor of a draft resolution that aimed to “align Palestine's participation” in the WHO with its participation in the UN. Of the 177 countries with voting rights, 101 supported the plan and five voted against it. The draft resolution – tabled by a group of mainly Muslim and Arab countries, along with China, Nicaragua and Venezuela – called for the Palestinians, who already have observer status at the WHO, to gain essentially the same rights as they would have if they were full members of the organizations.
