The political committee of the Council of Europe is meeting in Chania – On the initiative of D. Bakoyannis

At the initiative of Dora Bakoyannis, the Political Committee of the Council of Europe will meet in Chania from Sunday 15 May until Tuesday 17 May, with the participation of the Speaker of the Parliamentary Assembly Tiny Kox, and several Speakers of National Parliaments.

The reason that more than 100 members of the Council of Europe will attend in Crete is the invitation of the Vice President of the Council of Europe and Head of the Greek Delegation, Dora Bakoyannis, to meet the Political Committee of the Council in Chania, something that was scheduled during the Greek Presidency of the Council but it was not possible due to a pandemic.

The new security architecture in Europe, international cooperation, security in the Eastern Mediterranean and the European course of the Western Balkans are just some of the crucial issues for the Commission.

Both the Greek and Cypriot delegations will be present in their entirety in Chania and thus will have the opportunity to promote issues of Greek interest. The former Deputy Prime Minister, Evangelos Venizelos, is also a guest of the Political Committee. The first day of the Political Committee meeting, which will take place in Georgioupolis, will discuss the draft report on “Security and Stability in the Eastern Mediterranean”, which was approved by the Commission following a proposal by Dora Bakoyannis in August 2020, due to the Turkish provocation in the region.

On Sunday, May 15, at 18:30, the members of the Council will be guided to the new Archaeological Museum of Chania and then will attend a dinner hosted by the Deputy Regional Governor of Chania, Nikos Kalogeris.

On Monday, May 16, Dora Bakoyannis will present a lunch to the members of the Council in Argyroupoli, in which the former EU Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos will also participate.
